joelwhiteenglish

A common mistake many German speakers make is using the Present Simple for Future plans, and could form a sentence such as;

The correct sentence could be either "I will send it to you tomorrow" or "I'm going to send it to you tomorrow".

Remember: We talk about future plans in English by using;

  • The Future Simple if the plan is made spontaneously “the train is cancelled, fine we will take a taxi” or there is an element of promise to the plan "I will send you the document tomorrow".

  • The Present Continuous; "I am going to the cinema on Friday" or "we are meeting next Tuesday" if you are talking about a future plans where the plan exists in the present.

  • The Present Continuous in the structure "I'm going to go to the cinema", "I'm planning to visit France next summer" or "I'm hoping to finish work by 5pm".

  • The Present Simple can be used to talk about the future but only when talking about plans that are according to a timetable; "the meeting starts at 9am tomorrow morning".
