Anki Flashcards for Efficient Learning

Updated: Aug 1, 2023

A really efficient way to bring your English forwards is to use Anki Flashcards. Anki is a flashcards app that you can download onto your mobile phone and access via desktop computer. It helps you to practice remembering bits of information, and I will show you how to do this with learning English;

Getting Started:

To get started you will need to download Anki onto your mobile phone, set it up on your computer and create an account so that you can add your own information on one device and synchronise it with the other.

When you access Anki via your computer you will be presented with a screen like the one below. I have added two blue arrows to show you the important things that you will need. Firstly the arrow on the right hand side shows the Create Deck button - the deck is basically the folder that will contain whatever you want to learn. Once you have created the deck, the arrow on the right shows you where you can Add what you want to learn.

Adding New Cards:

Having clicked the Add button, you will be presented with a screen where you can add your target vocabulary. Below I had titled the deck 'English'. The word entered into the 'Front' section is the word that is shown first, from which you need to try to recall the target language, in the 'Back' section is the answer. Simply repeat this process to add all of the target language that you want to learn.

When you have added what you want to learn, you can then either synchronise the app on your phone and learn from there, or use it online. Naturally, having it on your phone is much more convenient, as you can learn from anywhere and pretty much at anytime that you have a spare 5 minutes. Adding new cards is easier online (in my opinion).

What to add to the Flashcards:

Basically add any new vocabulary, phrases, or sentences that you want to learn to build your English. You can also use Anki to improve grammar by adding sentences with the correct grammar in them - this is especially useful for the kind of grammatical errors that people frequently make. See the example below to give you an idea;

So, if you regularly add new language that you want to learn to Anki, and look at it everyday, you will be able to build up a lot of vocabulary effectively over a short space of time in a way that is both efficient and effective.
